Outstanding Tips On Discussing Your Style Taste With An Interior Designer

Vision Interiors

If you are looking to hire a professional for a home project, such as an architect, landscape designer or interior decorator, it is important that you communicate your needs clearly and concisely. This will help your designer understand exactly what you want.

You can gather inspiration by thoroughly assessing your preferences and likes. This will enable you to have these important conversations with your designer.

Create a Love List as well as a Not-for Me List

It is a good idea to take photos and ideas of your favorite things when you meet with interior designers. But have you ever thought of making a list about the things that you don't like? These dislikes, perhaps surprisingly, can also be crucial.

Try to get Visual

Interior designers are primarily visual. It makes sense that images can be the most effective way to convey your thoughts and feelings. This makes things simple and clear. For example, if "desert fashion" is southwestern with lots of natural wood and colorful fabrics, but your designer envisions more of a Palm Springs midcentury desert feel, conflict will naturally occur.

But if you can point at a photo and say "I love this" or "I don't like that look," your designer expert and you can quickly get on the same page. .

Include images that relate to your job immediately

It is a great place to begin, and you can start by collecting images of your likes and dislikes along with examples of the type of project that you are working on. Photographs of landscapes are a great way to start if you're working with a landscape architect or landscape designer.

Our interior designer recommends that you look at photos of exteriors and whole-house designs when you're looking for an architect to help you with a home remodel. Look for photos of kitchens if you're redesigning your kitchen. We think you see the picture.

But, you can also include some less-on-topic photos

You don't have to include images that aren't directly related to the task, but they can still be a great example of how you love a certain way. Images of lifestyle, food, and gardens can provide a great example of color palettes. They can help your designer get a better understanding of your overall style than the job photos.

Be picky

When you fill your idea books with photographs, you will have the opportunity to choose as many photos as you like. Enjoy it! Once you are ready to return in for another look, it's time to be picky. Focus on reducing each list to the top 10-20 best examples. This will allow your designer to have a smaller number of images to look at and it will also give you the opportunity to practice making design-related decisions. It will be easier to discuss your likes and dislikes the more you use that design power.

Try to Get Specific

It is useful to be able to point at an image that you love or loathe, but it can lead to confusion and miscommunications if you don’t clearly state what you want or don’t like about the space. Perhaps you are thinking about the color scheme.

Your interior designer might be more focused on furniture design, but they won't know it if you don't tell them. A note under each photo in your idea book with keywords explaining the space is helpful.

Take the following checklists and use them as a guide. Then, see how many you can add to your own lists.

The Things You Love Checklist:

You should include the following features:

The NOT FOR ME Checklist

You have strong aversions to certain colors or shades of color. You deserve a huge pat on your back for getting this far. It can be difficult to define your style. But, it doesn't mean you have to. Your design expert will usually be there to guide you through the entire process.

Your designer and you will have a better working relationship if you put more effort into the design. If you are having trouble identifying your style after going through the exercises, you might consider thinking laterally. Are there brands, restaurants or shops that reflect your love and hate? This can help you add to your personality information, provided that the places you choose are familiar or easy to find images of.

Remember that it is crucial that you communicate your preferences to your interior designer. However, once you have made your initial thoughts and feelings known, it is equally important to take a step back and allow your interior designer to suggest creative ideas you might not have considered.

What will the end result be? You might not be able to find the perfect place, but you can work hard to make it happen. You might be surprised to find that you love something you didn't know you loved, thanks to the creative vision of an interior designer.
